This verse (Verse 8 of the Supplement) has of late become the line of an interesting private thread, some details of which I note here. The suggestion and the experience has been that breath does not necessarily mean or imply simple “breath” as we generally understand matters, but is rather to do with the vital life force which ‘breathes’ in and out. For reference purposes I've listed the ten different kinds of air as listed under 'vaayu' in Winslow's Dictionary: 1. piraaNan | situated in the heart | | | 2. apaanan | in the top of the head and passing downwards | | | 3. samaanan | in the pit of the throat | | | 4. viyaanan | pervading the whole body | | | 5. utaanan | in the navel | | | 6. naakan | which affects motion and speech | | | 7. kuurman | causing horripilation (=raising of hairs & tingling up and down the spine) | | | 8. kirutaran OR kirukiran | seated in the face | | | 9. teevatattan | that which is exhaled in yawning, etc | | | 10. tanañseyan (tanañsayan) | that which remains in the body after death and escapes by splitting the head. | | |
Posted here as a sticky, it is intended subsequently to move it to the sub-board for Verse 8 of The Supplement.
